John,

I have some pretty big breaking news:

Just moments ago, special counsel Jack Smith filed additional charges against Donald Trump, including alleged attempts to have surveillance footage at Mar-a-Lago deleted.

The evidence against Trump just got stronger. A lot stronger. The twice-indicted, twice-impeached ex-president now has NEW charges filed against him: the alteration, destruction, and concealment of records.

And that’s not all. There is reporting that additional charges against him stemming from his effort to overturn the last election may be imminent. We’re coming toward an inflection point, and a fraught moment in the history of our democracy. But considering the interests of justice and the rule of law, it’s about damn time.

Today’s charges — and those that may follow — are an affirmation of the principle that the law applies equally to everyone, or at least it should, and that includes people who were formerly the president of the United States. Anything less is less than democracy.

John, I have no doubt that Donald Trump is going to react to this new superseding indictment or the next one to come, just like he’s reacted to past indictments: a lot of deflecting, pushing blame on others, and going on the offense — with the attacks against those who investigated these crimes (including me) not far off. And more ominously, with thinly-veiled or not-so-thinly-veiled calls to violence. Trump is willing to tear down the whole democratic house to save his skin.

And just like clockwork, Republican leaders will fall in line to protect Trump. Because the only thing that seems to matter to them is obtaining and keeping power.

They will attempt to retaliate against anyone who works to uphold the rule of law and defend our Constitution against Trump’s abuses of office — which makes me a prime target for their attacks.

But I won’t back down. Not now, not ever.

This is the moment we must defend the rule of law. Will you rush a donation of $5 to help us stand up for the truth and our democracy?

— Adam
