A female gray wolf traveled nearly 9,000 miles in her lifetime looking to create a family of her own.
OR-54, as she was known, was recently found dead in California, where she had been wandering for two years.
The details of her death are still unknown, but her story is a powerful testament to the will to survive in every wolf. We can't let them down.

OR-54 was born in southwestern Oregon in 2016, a member of the Rogue pack which was formed by her famous father, OR-7. She traversed nine California counties, returned to Oregon several times and even briefly dipped into Nevada — all in search of a mate and territory of her own.
We don't yet know if she died a natural death or was killed by a poacher.
But this could be the future of wolves across the lower 48 if the Trump administration gets its way: Lone wolves wandering for thousands of miles searching in vain for a mate, only to die or be killed without ever starting a family and establishing a territory.
Any day now the Trump administration will finalize its rule stripping gray wolves of endangered species protection across most of the lower 48.
We know what will happen next: More wolves will be shot, more will be trapped and more will find themselves alone facing a dim future.
In the middle of this wildlife extinction crisis, saving wolves is more important than ever. Saving life on Earth means restoring healthy ecosystems, and that means protecting as many wolves as possible.
