Dear John,

I wanted you to be among the first to know that after more than five years in the job, I am planning to step down from running Demand Justice day-to-day as Executive Director later this year. As we enter this transition period, one thing that I can promise is that our mission and our hard-driving approach will remain unchanged, and the critical work to rebalance our courts will continue uninterrupted.

It has been a tremendous source of pride to build this organization from scratch these last five years alongside my friend and co-founder, Chris Kang. Demand Justice is now well past the startup phase; it has a clear mission, stable funding, a talented staff, and tangible signs of early impact. Demand Justice is well positioned to continue leading what will be a generational struggle to reform our judiciary and protect our democracy.

Our mission from the start has been to alert progressives to the profound threat posed by the far right’s capture of our courts, and to begin mounting a counteroffensive. Today, the signs of a rising progressive legal movement are abundant: the issue has never been more salient with Democratic voters, the sustained focus on the Court’s politicization has broken through to the point that the Court’s approval rating is at a historic low, the Biden administration is setting records regarding its judicial selections, and each month brings new converts to the cause of structural Court reform.

I think it is fair to say Demand Justice has played no small part in this momentum swing.

I want to thank all of you, our volunteers and supporters, who have participated in our rallies, constituent meetings, lobby days, and other actions these last several years. You are living proof that this issue is galvanizing people at a grassroots level like never before.

While I am stepping down as Executive Director, I will continue to remain active on our Board of Directors, and I hope you too will continue to remain dedicated to the cause. You are the leaders in the fight for Court reform, and I'm excited for all the new milestones we'll accomplish together during this next chapter.

Gratefully,

Demand Justice is leading the fight to #ExpandTheCourt. Now is the time to add four seats to the Supreme Court and confirm justices who will safeguard our democracy and our rights.
