John — Black women move our economy, democracy, and society forward.

Yet, our work continues to be horribly undervalued and underpaid: Black women working full-time year round are paid only 67 cents to every dollar that non-Hispanic white men are paid. When part-time workers are factored in, that number drops to 64 cents. 

What does this mean? It means that Black women will have needed to work to this date, July 27, to catch up to what white men earn at the end of 2022.

This is unacceptable.

Achieving pay equity for Black women is about so much more than ensuring that Black women are paid on par with their white male co-workers. We also have to radically reimagine how we value Black women’s labor and ensure that they are centered in our economy.

That’s why our We Dream in Black (WeDiB) organizing project is so important. WeDiB harnesses the collective power and visibility of Black caregivers, nannies and housecleaners, to ensure that all workers are protected from abusive conditions in the workplace.

The WeDiB team has spent countless hours listening to and building relationships with hundreds of domestic workers around the country. The result? An innovative Black Workers Agenda that will give power back to the visions of Black women, immigrant women, and low-wage workers – some of the most invisible, essential and unprotected workers in our country.
