The United States emerged as one of the top improvers in the 2022 World Justice Project (WJP) Rule of Law Index after four years of declines. But headlines over the last several months point to continuing challenges.

Thank you to everyone who completed our recent survey on U.S. rule of law challenges.

Question 1:
On a scale of 1 to 5, with 1 being not at all and 5 being extremely, how concerned are you about the state of the rule of law in the United States today?

Answer: The average response was a 4, indicating a high level of concern.

Question 2:
Which U.S. rule of law challenges do you think are critical to address?

Over half of you agreed on each of the top five responses:
Question 3:
Of the topics you selected above, which ONE do you think is the most critical?
Interestingly, although voting/elections was a top vote getter as a critical issue, none of you thought it was the most critical. This may indicate our community sees election issues more as a symptom than a driver of U.S. rule of law challenges.

Indeed, confidence in voting is an area where WJP has seen sharp declines in our U.S. survey data, as discussed in our new
blog post ([link removed]) .

Thank you for the additional insights many of you shared in survey comments. We look forward to sharing more data, news, and analysis on the critical issues you have identified – and to working with you to address them.
WELCOME TO OUR U.S. RULE OF LAW COMMUNITY!
