"It's Time to See Clinician Burnout for What It Is"
Shifting the Focus to Hazardous Work Environments

“Clinician burnout is one of the most tenacious problems facing the contemporary health system. Recent years have seen a plethora of guidance on reducing burnout and improving health care workers’ well-being following the pandemic, but little evidence of improvement. Seeing the problem through an occupational health lens can reveal different solutions,” concludes a new commentary coauthored by Hastings Center senior research scholar Nancy Berlinger and colleagues at University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and UCLA. Improving Research Practices Around Race an "Urgent Priority"
An Evidence-Based Antiracist Intervention

The use of racial categories in biomedical research often misattributes the cause of health inequities to genetic and inherent biological differences rather than to racism. Improving research practices around race and ethnicity is an urgent priority. Toward that end, the Emory University institutional review board recently instituted an antiracist intervention, described in an article in the latest issue of Ethics & Human Research. Read more.

A recent Hastings Center special report identified an area of genomic research of particular concern: research on sensitive social or behavioral traits that seeks to compare groups defined by race, ethnicity, or genetic ancestry, where genetic ancestry could easily be misunderstood as race or ethnicity. The report concluded that such research should not be conducted, funded, or published without a compelling justification. Read more.
