Though democracy is a durable and resilient form of government, it can be weakened.

data shows that, in the rare cases where an electoral democracy has left the Free category during the last 20 years, the two primary drivers of decline have been overreach by elected leaders and issues rooted in an authoritarian past.
These threats to democracy tend to accumulate slowly over time, perhaps affording us an opportunity to bolster democracy and counter authoritarian attacks—if we know where to look and when to act.
