Friend, last month, the Supreme Court ended the 2022-23
term by dealing major blows to our democracy and unleashing unconscionable
attacks on civil rights, racial justice, and LGBTQ+ rights.
The Supreme Court’s decisions undermine the rights of our communities and
simultaneously erode the legitimacy of the nation’s highest court.
The Court has severely damaged its reputation and tarnished the nation’s
confidence in its ability to adhere to principles of impartiality, justice, and
fairness. It’s been demoralizing to witness a body that is meant to be
nonpartisan and bound by the U.S. Constitution instead make its own ideological
preferences the law of the land.
In a 6-3 decision, the Supreme Court ruled
[[link removed]] against affirmative action , overturning 50 years of precedent, in a devastating blow to fairness and
equity in higher education.
In another 6-3 vote, the Supreme Court ruled
[[link removed]] that businesses have a right to discriminate against LGBTQ+ people , rolling back decades of progress. This is the first time in history that the Court has granted a constitutional
right for a business that’s open to the public to deny service to members of a
protected class.
Once again, in a 6-3 vote, the Supreme Court ruled
[[link removed]] against the Biden administration’s plan to provide student loan relief for millions of Americans.
And the Supreme Court also ruled
[[link removed]] to significantly limit the Environmental Protection Agency’s authority to enforce the Clean Water Act and regulate the nation’s wetlands and
waterways.
We cannot let this Supreme Court undermine and destroy the rights and freedoms
that for so long have been guaranteed to the people of our country by the U.S.
Constitution. We must stand together, united in our determination to protect and
defend the principles that are the foundation of our democracy. Let us channel
our anger and frustration into action, advocating for change at every level of
our government.
Together, we will organize, mobilize, and ensure that our voices are heard. We
will work hand-in-hand with organizations and leaders who champion justice,
equality, and inclusion. We will fight for legislation and judicial reform that
safeguards the rights of all individuals, no matter who they are. And we will
not give up.
Let’s not forget that change is possible. History has shown us that the tireless
efforts of activists and regular citizens can help shape a better future.
So, let’s come together and demonstrate what this
movement is capable of. If you’re with us, please let us know below.
