Dear John, Last week, I joined the Washington Post Live for a discussion about the evolution of the workweek and my Thirty-Two Hour Workweek Act. If enacted, my legislation would: Amend the Fair Labor Standards Act by reducing what constitutes a standard working week from 40 hours to 32 hours; and Lower the maximum hours threshold for overtime compensation for non-exempt employees. Watch the interview here. The 40-hour workweek has been in place since 1938 and has not been adjusted to consider advancements in technology and worker productivity that today allow many employees to complete the same amount of work in less than 40 hours. Meanwhile, real wages have remained stagnant for decades. Under my legislation, workers would experience greater work-life balance, spend more time with their families, and contribute to emission reduction by decreasing commuting time. In addition to reintroducing the Thirty-Two Hour Workweek Act, I also recently reintroduced the Restoring Overtime Pay Act, which would allow more salaried workers to qualify for overtime pay. I will continue to support policies that will improve the quality of life of workers. As always, please stay in touch with my office about issues concerning you and your family. Sincerely, Mark Takano Member of Congress ‌ ‌ ‌ Rep.
