Friend,

When The Supreme Court ordered the Alabama State legislature to redraw their congressional map to represent more Black voters, we cautiously applauded the move as a step in the right direction for our democracy.

But when we saw the headline below, we were hardly surprised. It looks like Alabama Republicans are borrowing a move from their insurrectionist allies in the U.S. House. They’re defying the Supreme Court and the rule of law.

We know that the rot from The 147 insurrectionists in Congress has made our state legislatures more extreme and autocratic. There is a through line from the lawlessness of January 6th to the news we saw today from the Republicans in the Alabama State Legislature: a complete disregard for the Constitution.

But this fight isn’t over yet, and could backfire dramatically. The courts will inevitably review Alabama’s new congressional map and already have non-partisan experts on standby to draw a neutral map. That map would presumably favor Democrats more than a Republican-drawn compromise map ever would. If this case ends up in front of the Supreme Court again, though, who knows what will happen?

But it shouldn’t have to be this way. Voting in fair congressional districts is a right granted by the Voting Rights Act and the Constitution. Even this ideologically compromised Supreme Court was forced to reassert that right just a few weeks ago. Alabama lawmakers should want to draw congressional districts that respect their constituents’ civil rights and certainly should respect court orders. When bad-faith politicians force the courts to police every political decision, we all lose.

Add your name to our petition today demanding that the Alabama Republicans redraw their congressional map and respect the voting rights of their constituents.

If we win this fight, we have a massive opportunity to gain more seats in the House of Representatives. We can't afford to be silent with the majority this slim and the stakes this high.

-Operation 147
