Dear John,
I was 7 years old when I was diagnosed with a genetic condition that would require costly medical care for the rest of my life and made me disabled. I grew up with disabilities, not seeing other people like me and more isolated than my non-disabled peers. It wasn’t until I was a young adult that I found a disability community that welcomed me with love and understanding.
My disabled community allowed me to find pride in myself and our community, instead of being isolated and scared.
Now I’m proud to say that I’m a part of what my friend Rebecca Cokley calls the ADA Generation. We are the first generation of disabled people who have guaranteed rights under the Americans with Disabilities Act and have a legal right to show up in public as our full and fearless selves.
It was 33 years ago today that the ADA was signed into law.
Disability Pride Month is about carrying on the legacy of the disabled people who fought for the ADA and more. It’s also about continuing the fight for disability justice for generations to come.
Why? Because disability justice goes beyond the ADA!
We need to create a culture of care for all of us. Did you know…
* 1 in 4 people in the U.S. live with a disability?
* 10% of those disabilities are invisible?
* Nearly 40 million caregivers in the U.S. provide care to adults with a disability?
Practicing disability pride helps me remember that a better future is possible for all of us. Help us spread the word about the importance of disability pride by sharing this graphic with your friends and family!
