The RESTORE Act will end a punitive drug war policy that prevents people with felony drug convictions from receiving Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits, also known as food stamps. This lifetime ban disproportionately affects women and people of color, and even harms children by reducing a family’s overall household benefit. We must end it. No one should go hungry because of a past drug felony conviction.
Also on track to be introduced to Congress this year is the Drug Policy Reform Act, which fundamentally re-imagines our nation’s drug policy to treat drug use as a health issue, not a criminal problem. It would decriminalize drugs at the federal level. This means ending criminal penalties for the personal possession of drugs, shifting regulatory authority away from the Department of Justice to the Department Health and Human Services, and more.
This could be the year we enact these two transformative pieces of legislation, Friend. But getting them through Congress won’t be easy.
We’re counting on people like you to step up and join the fight at this critical moment. Please make your gift now and together we can end the drug war and begin to repair its harms!
