NAFCU calls on CUs to re-up fight against the inclusion of interchange legislation in NDAA ([link removed] )

NAFCU Tuesday reignited the call for credit unions to join the association’s advocacy efforts fighting back against efforts from Sen. Roger Marshall, R-Kan., to attach interchange legislation to the fiscal year 2024 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA).

Two NAFCU-sought bills that would provide flexibility under the member business lending cap (MBL) and expand Federal Home Loan Bank (FHLB) membership were introduced Tuesday by Reps. Vicente Gonzalez, D-Texas, and Brian Fitzpatrick, R-Pa.

NAFCU details CFPB’s harmful mischaracterization of junk fees ([link removed] )

NAFCU Vice President of Legislative Affairs Brad Thaler wrote to the Senate Banking Subcommittee on Financial Institutions and Consumer Protection ahead of today’s hearing on the impact the CFPB’s mischaracterization of junk fees has on consumers. In the letter, Thaler emphasized NAFCU’s support of fair, transparent, and competitive markets for consumer financial services and improving consumers’ understanding of financial products and services.

As the CFPB moves forward with various rulemakings and the U.S. Supreme Court is set to consider the constitutionality of the bureau’s funding structure later this fall, NAFCU is seeking insights from member credit unions on whether the bureau is meeting its mission of consumer protection.

Vance introduces bill to increase deposit insurance protection ([link removed] )

Sen. J.D. Vance, R-Ohio, recently introduced legislation aimed at increasing deposit insurance coverage for smaller and regional financial institutions, including all credit unions. The legislation would fully guarantee all noninterest-bearing transaction accounts at banks with less than $225 billion in assets, and at all credit unions regardless of assets held.
