Dear Friend of MCV,

We are thrilled to report that Maine lawmakers have passed one of the biggest bills of the session! Very early this morning – and on the last day of the longest legislative session we can remember – the bill to responsibly develop offshore wind in Maine (LD 1895) passed in the Maine House and Senate!

This bill is the best way forward for offshore wind in Maine. It’s the result of countless conversations and thoughtful negotiations with legislative, administration, and organizational partners, and we’re so proud of the outcome.

We are full of gratitude for the hundreds of you who signed petitions, sent emails to your legislators, and joined us for Conservation Lobby Day to express how important this legislation is for Maine.

Now, the bill heads to the Governor’s desk, where we expect she will quickly sign it into law.

LD 1895 will create new jobs, stabilize electricity costs, and help fight climate change at a time when the Gulf of Maine is warming faster than 99% of the world’s oceans [1]. It will set the stage for an offshore wind industry in the Gulf of Maine that has high standards for labor, the environment, and equity – helping to ensure that offshore wind benefits all Mainers [2].

In addition to delivering the clean energy we need to stabilize energy prices and meet our climate goals, this bill now also includes critical provisions to ensure that a future Maine offshore wind port is built with strong labor standards. It still strongly incentivizes siting projects outside of Lobster Management Area 1, a priority of broad consensus across Maine’s commercial fisheries.

Responsible offshore wind is becoming a reality for Maine because of supporters like you. Thank you!

Onward,
