** NPT Pride
------------------------------------------------------------

What a weekend of wonderful events to celebrate the first ever Pride in Port Talbot!

The parade on Friday, market and flash mob on Saturday. Great fun, and good vibes only.
It was wonderful to be at the first ever NPT Pride parade and even better to see the weather didn’t put people off, and there were over 200 of us!

** Meeting Ukrainian Families
------------------------------------------------------------
I recently met with Ukrainian families who are living in Aberavon to discuss the issues that they are facing.

** Local Business Lush & Tidy
------------------------------------------------------------

Absolutely wonderful to have a bit of Aberavon with me at all times here in my Westminster office, thanks to the beautiful print, mug and coaster from Lush & Tidy.

They’re a fantastic business here in Port Talbot and I recommend people have a look at their shop and consider supporting them!

** Windrush Day Presentation
------------------------------------------------------------

Neath Port Talbot Black & Minority Ethnic Community Association put together a really insightful presentation and craft workshop today on Windrush Day to mark the 75th anniversary of the Empire Windrush’s arrival in the U.K.

I had to be in Parliament to speak in a debate this afternoon, so a member of my office was there to represent me and to show my commitment to the vitally important community work that was discussed at the workshop, and I was really pleased to see that the event was so well attended.

** New Westminster Boundaries
------------------------------------------------------------

Please see my statement on the new parliamentary constituency boundaries and what this means for Aberavon.

“For those communities that will make up the new Aberafan Maesteg constituency, I hugely look forward to being your Welsh Labour candidate at the next General Election and to knocking on doors across all your communities.

“I’m very sorry to be losing the communities of Skewen, Llandarcy, Jersey Marine and Crymlyn Burrow, but you will have a wonderful Welsh Labour candidate fighting your corner in C ([link removed]) arolyn Harris.

“In the meantime, I want to reassure all the residents in the current Aberavon constituency that I remain you MP until the next General Election is called. So please do continue to get in touch with me via email, phone or letter, or by booking in to one of my regular advice surgeries. As always my team and I stand ready to assist and support residents.”

** This Month In Parliament
------------------------------------------------------------
Infected Blood Debate

The infected blood scandal has caused decades of suffering, health issues, financial loss & stigma.

My constituents, along with all the victims & their families, deserve better than endless delays.

They deserve to see justice delivered, and they deserve to see it delivered now.

We Need Our Steel

I was delighted to host Community union Reps in Westminster today, who met with supportive MPs ahead of today’s steelworker march to Parliament.

We discussed steel’s critical role in delivering national security, good jobs and decarbonisation.

Britain, We Need Our Steel.
Versus Arthritis

This month I went along to the Versus Arthritis parliamentary drop in to support the 15,000 of my constituents living with arthritis in Aberavon.
Illegal Migration Bill

The Labour Party MPs & Peers did our best to minimise the worst impacts of the unworkable & damaging ‘Bigger Backlog Bill’, but Tory ministers were too arrogant to listen. Its fundamental flaws will be exposed through its implementation, and British tax-payers will pay the price.

We need this shower of a government out, and Labour’s five-point plan to end the dangerous Channel crossings, end hotel use and fix an asylum system broken by the Conservatives.

Helping to Decarbonise the Steel Industry

I asked the Minister what steps she is taking to help the steel industry to decarbonise.

Community Union Justice Conference

Those who work in our prisons and immigration system deserve our gratitude, respect and to be safe at work. Assaults are up 247% since 2010.

I was pleased to speak at the Community Union Justice Conference alongside Catherine Atkinson.
Industrial Strategy for Floating Offshore Wind

Floating Offshore Wind is a once in a generation opportunity for Aberavon, Wales & UK, but there are fears this opportunity will be squandered by the UK Government.

I asked the Secretary of State when he’ll set out an industrial strategy for FLOW, with Welsh manufacturing & jobs at its heart.

Armed Forces Parliamentary Scheme

My time with the Royal Tank Regiment gave me valuable insights into the absolutely pivotal role that tanks and other armoured vehicles play in modern warfare, particularly in light of what we are learning from the war in Ukraine.

We took part in Exercise Iron Cyclone, a key training exercise that the Royal Tank regiment is currently undertaking on Salisbury Plain.
Barnardo's Journeys of Hope

I met with young people who have come to the UK to seek sanctuary and have been working with Barnardo’s to support others in a similar position.

The Journeys of Hope project will produce a comic book to offer advice to young refugees help tackle challenges they face upon arrival.

Truly inspiring work from Barnardo’s’ ‘Triangles’ initiative.
Initiatives of Change Roundtable

On World Refugee Day I was delighted to join the Initiatives of Change roundtable with Mike Kane MP to discuss Labour’s plans for a fair and well-managed asylum system – a world apart from the chaos we have today.

** Media Highlights
------------------------------------------------------------
BBC

The BBC covered the Home Office plans for asylum and some of my comments on them.

The Home Office quote near the end of this piece is untrue.

The Illegal Migration Bill (Bigger Backlog Bill) prevents the UK Government from returning small boat asylum seekers to their home country because it prevents the Home Secretary from processing small boat asylum claims!

The Guardian

Tata Steel argues that producing lower-carbon (and eventually zero-carbon) steel could give British steelmaking a new lease of life.

Carbon border adjustments – essentially adding the environmental costs of carbon pollution on to imported steel – could also level the playing field for UK producers versus rivals abroad that do not have to worry about greenhouse gas emissions.

Strong piece from Jasper Jolly on what is needed to get our steel industry fit for the future.

In it, I argue that we need a just transition for steelworkers and their families.
