Dear John,
Despite the efforts of NIAC and hundreds of Iranian Americans and allies, as well as our friends at the ACLU and Asian Americans Advancing Justice, the Senate adopted the Rounds amendment barring certain property purchases in the U.S. for Iranian, Chinese, Russian, and North Korean nationals.
This is bad news but rest assured – we are not backing down from the battle to block this and similar measures targeting our community's rights.
There are three important things to know about the path forward:
-
Through our advocacy we secured protections for Iranian Americans and all U.S. citizens and green card holders from these restrictions. This measure is much narrower than some of the proposals from states like Texas and Florida – but it is still unacceptable. Watered down national-origin discrimination is still discrimination, and this bill still opens the door to profiling against all of us and further discriminatory legislation down the road.
-
This measure has passed the Senate but is not law yet and we will continue fighting. The House and Senate must negotiate and then pass a final version of the Defense bill, and we are now turning our efforts to prevent this discriminatory amendment from becoming law.
-
Finally, we now have more allies on our side and far more awareness of this issue among policymakers for the battle ahead.
As long as we have your support and the resources to keep fighting, we will not rest until our community and all community's rights are protected from these property bans. And we will prevail.
But we cannot do this without the serious resources necessary to educate lawmakers, mobilize the public, and conduct expert research. Please make a donation today to directly support the campaign so we can stop these discriminatory measures.
Donate directly to campaign to protect our rightsWhile today's outcome is disappointing, our work does not stop here. Together we can turn this short-term setback into a long-term victory.
Onward,
Jamal Abdi
President, NIAC
