Fare-Free Rally at the Metro Board Meeting

Thursday, July 27, 2023 @ 9:00 am - 12:00 pm

Public transit must be for the masses – used by as many people as possible — to bring working people together and improve our quality of life. That's why transit should be completely free for all transit riders. Instead, LA Metro spends a lot of money to purchase and operate its fare system – money that could be used to actually improve transit across the County and provide resources for transit riders! That's why DSA-LA voted to make abolishing fares on LA Metro a primary focus of our transit justice priority campaign. Join us THIS THURSDAY, July 27, to demand LA Metro end fare collection for transit services and provide FREE & FREQUENT TRANSIT FOR ALL.

We're joining coalition partners at July’s monthly Metro Board of Directors meeting, which marks the beginning of Mayor Karen Bass’s term as LA Metro board chair. The ACT-LA coalition, which has been pushing for fareless transit, is mobilizing to rally and demand that Bass, whose campaign platform included visions of universal fareless transit, deliver on her promises.

The rally will happen at Metro Headquarters near Union Station, which is easily accessible via metro. Come join us in demanding fareless transit for all of LA, and wear red!

Support striking workers!

Just this weekend, DSA-LA was active on the picket lines supporting UNITE HERE Local 11 hotel and hospitality workers. The Westside Branch supported workers at the Andaz Hotel in West Hollywood and the Eastside Branch supported workers at the Pasadena Hilton. We are excited to stand in solidarity with them in their fight for a just contract!

Want to support labor struggles in LA?

  • We've been sending supplies and solidarity to the picket lines for weeks now, and we are ready to do the same for hotel workers, actors, hospitality workers, UPS workers, writers and more. Donate here to our Strike Tacos! strike fund to continue to send supplies to the picket line and support what feels like it could soon be a general strike.
  • Join us and Starbucks Workers United for a movie screening of the labor classic 9 to 5 as the Starbucks Workers United's "The Union Is Calling" 13-city bus tour rumbles through Los Angeles on its way up the West Coast. Jane Fonda, Lily Tomlin, and Dolly Parton star in a wild and hilarious satire of workplace exploitation! RSVP here.
  • We will also be joining SBWU for a rally at the Cypress Park Starbucks to send a clear message to Starbucks to stop union busting. The rally will be Thursday, July 27, 2023 at 11:00 am. RSVP here.
  • Or if you are on the Westside. Join us and Starbucks workers at a Solidarity Vigil to demand Starbucks stop union busting and negotiate a fair contract. It will be Friday, July 28, 2023 at 10:00 am on the Westside. RSVP here. The location will be sent to those who RSVP.
  • As workers are striking to fight for better working conditions, we are also fighting at City Hall. DSA LA has been joining tourism workers at City Hall to raise the minimum wage across the industry as part of the Tourism Workers Rising campaign, a coalition of 65 organizations including clergy, community, and labor. If the Tourism Workers Rising ordinance passees, it would update our current living wage policies for airport and hotel workers to $25/hour immediately, $30/hour by the 2028 Olympics, and ensure that tourism workers have access to quality health care. We have to keep the pressure on City Hall to move this forward. Join us in signing the petition asking the LA City Council to support this motion!

Help send comrades to DSA's National Convention!

Join us at Elysian Park on July 30th from 4PM to 7PM for fun, food, and games! We'll be playing Lotería, a classic game similar to bingo, with some exciting PRIZES available for our winners, with and all proceeds raised will go towards helping DSA-LA's delegates attend our national convention!

DSA-LA and Coalition Partners Are on the Path to Victory to Make LA a Sanctuary City

On June 9th, 2023 the Los Angeles City Council unanimously approved a motion to draft an ordinance that would in effect make Los Angeles a sanctuary city. The motion presents clear policy proposals that would prohibit the use of government resources, property, or personnel from being used for any federal immigration enforcement and end the entanglement between local authorities and federal immigration agencies such as ICE . After 60 days, Los Angeles will be presented with this draft ordinance. This is a moment for celebration and also recognition of DSA-LA’s organizing efforts since 2017.

Housing and Homelessness Meeting in the Park!

Sunday, July 30 @ 11:00 am - 12:30 pm

Hi tenant comrades!

Last month’s in-person meeting was a great success. We had a lot of generative conversation outside the stifling confines of the Zoom room, and we enjoyed each other’s company in a beautiful park! As such, we’re going to do it again; the next HnH meeting will be held on Sunday 7/30 @ Harold A. Henry Park, 11am-12:30pm.
