Alabama Shows Our Country Hasn't Changed ([link removed])

By Marc Elias

Here are some legislative updates from today.
* New York Republicans appealed ([link removed]) an appellate court’s decision that requires the Independent Redistricting Commission to redraw the state's congressional map, giving New York’s highest court the final say. Five members of the Commission also appealed ([link removed]) the decision.
* In Arkansas, a federal court dismissed ([link removed]) a lawsuit that argued that the methods used to elect judges and justices to the Arkansas Court of Appeals and Arkansas Supreme Court denied Black voters the opportunity to elect their candidates of choice.
* In Alabama, civil rights organizations asked ([link removed]) a federal court to block the map for the Jefferson County, Alabama commission. The groups argue that the districts in the state’s most populous county are racially gerrymandered to "crack" and "pack" Black voters in the Birmingham-based county.
* A federal court in Arizona held ([link removed]) a hearing in a case challenging two voter suppression laws that impose strict proof of citizenship requirements for voters.
