Nottingham Castle reopens
Castle
*Nottingham Castle had its grand reopening on Monday 26 June, which Cllr's Sam and Matt were delighted to attend along with Cllr Pavlos Kotsonis, the council’s Portfolio Holder for Leisure and Culture.*
In the last couple of months, the Castle has hosted screenings of the King’s Coronation and Eurovision, as well as a Medieval Legends taster event. The city was blessed with great weather for the big day when local children joined Robin Hood to demand the Sheriff of Nottingham open the gatehouse doors (she relented!). Over 1800 people attended on the day.
Tickets to the Castle are available online [ [link removed] ] - a year-long pass is only £12 and up to 3 children under 15 go free with one paying adult.

Visits to local places of worship
Faith walk
*Sam and Matt were joined by Cllr Sajid Mohammed, the Portfolio Holder for Neighbourhoods, Safety and Inclusion on a walk to visit some of the faith institutions that serve the residents of Castle ward. *
They were given a warm welcome by representatives from St Barnabus Cathedral, St Nicholas Church and the Islamic Centre to hear about the great work they do with their congregations and the wider community.
These meetings were organised after the horrible attacks in Nottingham in June in recognition that we all need to stand together as a city, with people from all backgrounds and faiths. It was heartening to hear about some of the interfaith work that these organisations are already doing and they will look to support them however they can.

Park Garden Trail
Garden trail
*Since 1986, Nottingham’s Park Estate has hosted a biannual Garden Trail [ [link removed] ]. Over 20 beautiful private gardens are opened to the public by residents to raise money for local charities.*
Both Castle ward councillors attended the twenty fifth Park Garden Trail on Sunday 11 June, which followed a four-year absence due to the pandemic.
It was a blazing hot and busy day as thousands of people, both from Nottingham and much farther afield, flocked to the Park Estate to enjoy the gardens, entertainment and local food and drinks stalls. Sam enjoyed volunteering at the Castle Gatehouse entrance, while Matt explored the gardens on what was, by happy coincidence, his thirtieth birthday!
In total, the event raised a staggering £38,000! The money will go to ten small, local charities, including Nottingham Oasis Breast Cancer Trust, Windmill Community Garden, City Arts, and SFiCE Foundation, which supports homeless and vulnerable people.

University welcome event
University event
*On Wednesday 5 July, Sam visited the University of Nottingham to attend its welcome event for new councillors. In line with the Universities for Nottingham [ [link removed] ] commitment, a joint endeavour with Nottingham Trent University the event was intended to encourage collaboration to advance their civic mission.*
It was a whirlwind tour, beginning at the Park Campus for a look at some of the University’s pioneering eco architecture projects, and a meeting with the Students' Union. They then went on to the Jubilee Campus to see the state-of-the-art Power Electronics and Machines Centre, where 170 researchers are advancing electrification technology, in support of Nottingham’s 2028 carbon neutrality target.
Next they went to the Cobot Maker Space, another cutting edge facility down the road, which was built to allow the exploration of human-robot interaction. Finally they headed to the Lakeside Arts Centre, to meet Faculty Pro Vice-Chancellor for Arts and Civil Lead, Professor Jeremy Gregory, and a number of impressive students, alumni and employees.
Matt and Sam are looking forward to working with the University and its Students' Union, and have already started talking about planning a community event together.

Streets for People programme making good progress
Streets for people
*Over 70 resurfacing schemes have been completed so far across the city.*
In 2021, the council successfully bid as part of a competitive process for money from the Government’s Levelling Up fund to improve streets and local town centres, and make walking and cycling easier and safer.
Nottingham City Council has approved £11million of improvements to make our neighbourhoods greener, safer, better places to get around. Streets that have been improved so far include College Street, East Circus Street and Regent Street.
We are also setting money aside for tree work and bin replacements. You can find out more by visiting the streets for people website [ [link removed] ].
