A new Florida education policy championed by Republicans actually teaches students from sixth to eighth grade that slaves benefited from their bondage because they "developed skills" that could be used for "personal benefit." To back up this preposterous lie, the state offered up the names of sixteen Black individuals who supposedly benefitted from enslavement. Predictably, at least half of the people named were never slaves in the first place. Despite what conservatives want children to think, chattel slavery was not an exercise in resume building.
