“A suicide bomber killed at least 30 soldiers and wounded scores more inside a
military academy in Somalia's capital Mogadishu on Monday, two military sources
said, in an attack claimed by the al Shabaab militant group. A military
campaign launched by government forces and allied militiamen last year has
forced the al Qaeda-linked group from large swathes of territory in southern
Somalia, but the militants have continued to stage deadly raids. In recent
weeks, with the military campaign against them stalled as the army prepares a
second phase of the offensive, al Shabaab fighters have stepped up their
attacks. In late May, they killed at least 54 Ugandan peacekeepers at a base
south of Mogadishu. They laid siege to Baidoa, one of the country's largest
cities for nearly two weeks. And they have staged a series of raids in
Mogadishu this month.”

Associated Press: Jury To Deliver Verdict Over Brussels Extremist Attacks That
Killed 32
<[link removed]>

“A jury is expected to render its verdict Tuesday over Belgium’s deadliest
peacetime attack, suicide bombings at the Brussels airport and a busy subway
station in 2016 that killed 32 people in a wave of violence in Europe claimed
by the Islamic State group. Among the 10 defendants is Salah Abdeslam, who
already is serving a life sentence without parole in France over his role in
attacks that hit Paris cafes, the Bataclan theater and France’s national
stadium in 2015. The suspects in Brussels were tried on charges including
murder, attempted murder and participation in the acts of a terrorist group.
The biggest trial in Belgium’s judicial history unfolded over more than half a
year in a special court to address the exceptional case. Survivors and families
of victims hoped the trial and verdict would help them work through the trauma
and find closure.”

Voice Of America News: Taliban Persistently Refute Al-Zawahiri's Death By US
Drone Strike, One Year On <[link removed]>

“Nearly a year after the United States killed al-Qaida chief Ayman
al-Zawahiri in a drone strike in Afghanistan's capital, Kabul, the country's
Taliban leaders continue to make conflicting claims about the circumstances
around the death of the world's most wanted man, raising doubts about their
counterterrorism pledges. ‘We had no information about Ayman al-Zawahiri, and
we had nothing to do with his killing,’ Taliban Defense Minister Mullah
Mohammad Yaqoob told Saudi-based Al Arabia television channel on Friday. On
Saturday, the Taliban governor of Kabul was quoted by an Afghan mainstream
television channel as outrightly denying the presence of the al-Qaida chief in
the city. ‘There is no evidence to prove Zawahiri was killed in Kabul,’
Mohammad Qassim Khalid told TOLO news. The latest Taliban claims come days
after U.S. President Joe Biden stated that Washington and the Taliban were
cooperating to push out al-Qaida terrorists from the war-torn country.
‘Remember what I said about Afghanistan? I said al-Qaida would not be there. I
said it wouldn't be there. I said we'd get help from the Taliban,’ Biden told
reporters at the White House earlier this month without elaborating.”
