The continued escalation of violent conflict in Sudan has forced thousands of people to flee the country. Every day, 800 to 1,000 people cross into the border town of Renk, South Sudan, where the refugee center is operating far above capacity. As a result, displaced families are camping outside, using any materials they can salvage to shield themselves from the unyielding sun. There is little food, shelter, or water to accommodate everyone.
Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) launched emergency responses in the Upper Nile and Northern Bahr El Ghazal states of South Sudan, running three mobile clinics in Renk and one in Aweil. Our teams continue to treat patients for diseases caused by a lack of sanitation and provide over 90,000 liters of water every day for displaced families in the area.
With the rainy season on the horizon, we fear the situation may evolve into a catastrophic disease outbreak that puts thousands of lives at risk. And we are turning to you for help.
Anyr Mathok Deng returned to South Sudan after 40 years of living in Sudan, seeking refuge from violence—and now, she sleeps in a warehouse close to the river in town. "There are hardly any relief items necessary for survival," she says. "Snakes and scorpions are coming from the river. There is not enough clear water.”
Since April, more than 127,000 people have sought refuge in South Sudan to escape dangerous armed conflict in neighboring Sudan. Many have endured long and dangerous journeys in order to reach safety. However, their lives remain at risk—this time threatened by diseases like cholera and a lack of proper shelter, food, and clean drinking water.
