Earlier this month I was thrilled to see the Biden-Harris Administration
cap child care co-pays at 7% of a family’s income for folks benefiting
from federal child care assistance. Affordable child care benefits not
just kids and parents, but our whole economy. It’s an investment in our
country’s workforce and critical to building a strong, stable, globally
competitive U.S. economy.

Congress needs to do more so that all families have access to reliable,
affordable, quality child care. But Republicans just released their
proposed budget bill for 2024, and instead of supporting families, the
bill would make deep cuts to every area of education—from preschool to
college:

* 51,000 children would lose access to early childhood education through
Head Start. Nearly 6,000 of those kids are in California.
* It would eliminate academic services for English language learners.
* It would eliminate need-based financial aid and work-study
opportunities for college students.
* Nearly 225,000 teachers serving low-income communities could be kicked
out of the classroom. Over 25,000 of those teachers are in California.

John, as a mom of
three kids attending California public schools, and someone who has
navigated child care as a single working parent, I know how absurd these
proposed cuts are. They would be devastating to so many families and
communities. I’ll keep fighting against these cuts, and pushing Congress
to do more to support families.
