Hello,
This week, I explain how to detect patterns in behavior in order to react appropriately in a relationship. Then, I talk with Douglas Murray about what the detrimental effects of a misguided purpose are and how to combat fear. From the archives, I discuss how to move on after traumatic experiences.

The Rule Of Three
An error that could have been bound at a low level can, instead, cascade through the entire hierarchy of self-conceptualization. Imagine that each level of the hierarchy has to be protected against the propagation of error messages from a lower level. Then imagine each level of the hierarchy has a resistance level that is set by the tonic level of serotonin. So the higher the serotonin level, which corresponds to higher social status, the more error has to accrue at a given level of analysis before a message will propagate up the hierarchical system.
One of the things my wife and I have worked out in terms of modulating our reactivity to each other and to other people is asking: When should you respond to a disruption in social communication? When should you call someone on it? And our answer has been the rule of three. That is fairly typical of narrative descriptions of such things. If it happens once, you can ignore it. It is just random fluctuation. If it happens twice, you could mark it but still discount it. But if it happens three times, it establishes a pattern — and then something has to be called into question.
In Jordan’s series “On Marriage,” he discusses the fundamentals of relationships, the critical aspects of marriage, and the beauty that comes from this commitment. Most unique in this series are the personal stories Jordan shares of his and Tammy’s marriage in these three episodes.
