John,

Sandra “Sandy” Hemme has spent more than four decades in prison, despite mounting evidence that could prove her innocence. Although she’s spent the majority of her life wrongly incarcerated, she has never given up hope that her name will one day be cleared.

Right now, we’re fighting for her freedom and we need your support. Will you add your name to this petition and join our efforts to get Sandy the justice she deserves? [innocenceproject.org/petitions/free-sandra-hemme/?p2asource=ip-em_07242023]

Sandy was wrongly convicted for the 1980 murder of Patricia Jeschke in St. Joseph, Missouri. At the time, Sandy was a 20-year-old psychiatric patient receiving treatment at a local hospital. There was no physical evidence or eyewitness tying her to the crime, but police questioned her and coerced her into making false statements while she was sedated and being treated with antipsychotic medication.

During her trial — which only lasted a single day — Sandy’s attorney presented no witnesses in her defense and the jury never learned about the extremely coercive circumstances under which police obtained her false statements.

We’re working to correct this horrible injustice. Will you join us in this fight by adding your name to the petition right now? [innocenceproject.org/petitions/free-sandra-hemme/?p2asource=ip-em_07242023]

Thank you for your support,

— The Innocence Project Team

The Innocence Project works to free the innocent, prevent wrongful convictions, and create fair, compassionate, and equitable systems of justice for everyone. Founded in 1992 by Barry C. Scheck and Peter J. Neufeld at the Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law at Yeshiva University, the organization is now an independent nonprofit. Our work is guided by science and grounded in anti-racism.
