Indivisibles,

Recently, you’ve gotten a few emails from us about the special election in Ohio, where the MAGA legislature is trying to subvert the rules of democracy itself in order to stop voters from restoring abortion rights and passing fair maps.

We won’t go into all the details again, but in short, the legislature scheduled a special election at great expense in August (when few people usually vote) to try to change the threshold for voters to amend the state constitution from a simple majority to 60%. Why? Because there’s an initiative on the ballot this November that would make reproductive freedom a state constitutional right and polling shows 59% of voters support it.

The MAGA legislature wanted this to all fly under the radar. They hoped they could activate anti-choice zealots to go to the polls, while most voters were left none-the-wiser.

Well, that’s not happening. Thanks to the work of our groups in Ohio, our pro-democracy allies and reproductive rights groups, and the amazing support of Indivisibles around the country, Ohioans are being kept informed. They’re understandably pissed. And boy oh boy, are they voting in massive numbers.

We need your help to keep up this momentum. As of now, we still haven’t reached our budget for our statewide textbank next week -- raising $3,500 today could enable us to contact another 100,000 voters. Please chip in now and help us ensure we defeat this GOP power grab.

We’re not here to sow false panic or invent crises to get donations. The fact of the matter is, the news out of Ohio is GOOD right now. The number of early votes is far outpacing expectations, trending 5x ahead of last August’s special election and already surpassing the early vote in last May’s Ohio Senate primary. We can’t know which way those votes are being cast, but we do know that voters really hate this referendum when they learn about it -- so high turnout is positive.

We’re thrilled that this coordinated turnout effort really appears to be working. But we’re not going to take anything for granted because right-wing groups know this is their best chance to seize power away from Ohio voters so they can maintain the state’s draconian abortion ban and keep their out-of-control gerrymandering in place. And they know that if this works in Ohio, it’s a model they can apply to entrench MAGA power in states nationwide.

We’ve seen some major investments from MAGA donors supporting this anti-democratic referendum and some truly disgusting, transphobic ads seeking to mislead voters.

Anything can happen over the next two weeks, so we want to make sure we’re getting the facts to as many voters as we possibly can.

To do that, we need your help to fund our texting program. We’re not talking about huge amounts of money here. $3,500 will help us send the texts we need. Other funds from this email will help us reimburse groups for final-stretch GOTV efforts.

Whether you’ve already supported this effort (thank you!) or not, we hope you’ll give a few dollars today to help us defeat this MAGA power grab and score a major victory for democracy.
