Today, we are pleased to share with you the launch of Start with Dignity [[link removed]] , a binational campaign to confront the onslaught of human rights violations in the United States. It answers the question of how we recognize each other’s human dignity in every conversation, every policy proposal, and every action.
Whether we’re addressing inhumane treatment or police brutality, we must start with dignity to honor the humanity of affected community members and our own humanity. Through Start with Dignity [[link removed]] , we are calling on the United States to protect human rights here at home, beginning with protecting people from harm when encountering law enforcement.

Each year, over 1 million people in the United States are threatened with or subjected to use of force [[link removed]] by law enforcement, and 2022 was the deadliest year yet [[link removed]] . The majority of those harmed by local police, state officers, and federal border agents are people of color, mostly Black people and immigrants whose families originate from Mexico and other countries in Latin America, Africa, the Middle East, and Asia.
The type of law enforcement abuse and impunity we see is uniquely American; it stems from a low use of force standard that violates the basic international human right to life. The U.S. standard allows law enforcement to use force that an officer believes is “ reasonable” , but this officer-centered standard fails to bring justice time and again. Alternatively, the global human rights standard [[link removed]] limits use of force to what is “ necessary and proportionate” – a standard that honors the dignity of the human lives that law enforcement is sworn to protect. It’s time for the United States to align with human rights standards to honor our dignity.
Dignity is the heart of our democracy and the basis for human rights. Start With Dignity [[link removed]] not only provides a framework for how we treat each other but also illuminates the path toward a brighter future and saves lives. Today, we call on President Biden to renew America’s promise to pledge to protect human rights — to start with dignity.
