When I first met Shakeena, she was running out of time. After fleeing an abusive relationship and becoming homeless in Charlotte, North Carolina, the 38 year old had finally found safety at a domestic violence shelter, but there was a limit to how long she could stay. She wanted to apply for affordable housing but couldn’t without a copy of her birth certificate.

The shelter recommended Shakeena reach out to VoteRiders for help. After meeting with Shakeena and learning about her story, I was able to help her request copies of her birth certificate and Social Security card. VoteRiders paid for all the associated fees.

A week later, Shakeena received her documents in the mail. She now has everything she needs to find safe, secure, and affordable housing.

Next, I’ll be working with Shakeena to use those vital documents to get a state-issued driver’s license.

I’m so proud to be a part of this organization that is helping people secure the ID they need not just to vote but to apply for jobs, find housing, apply for public assistance, travel, and so much more. An ID can change a life, and no one should have to navigate the bureaucracy and barriers to getting one alone.
