Back in 2019, the future of our democracy looked pretty uncertain. Donald Trump and his allies were in power all over the country, and I knew that if we were going to defeat them, we needed to build a pipeline of next-generation leaders we could support well into the future – just as Republicans have done for the last 50 years.
That is why I started The Next 50, an organization that worked to identify the next generation of Democratic leaders, invest in their campaigns, and start winning back power wherever we could.
At The Next 50, we made it our mission to take on MAGA extremists wherever we saw the opportunity. And we won big: In 2020, Democrats took back the Senate, flipped state legislatures across the country, and elected Joe Biden as president. At The Next 50, we invested in some of the most consequential races and won 80 percent of them.
But then, last year, MAGA extremism hit home in a way I never expected. When George Santos won in NY-03, it felt like a cruel joke – I had just spent so much time and effort defeating all these extreme Republicans across the country, and now the community I grew up in was represented by one.
It was obvious I had to do something. So, I jumped into the race – and I have not looked back.
I am proud of The Next 50’s work to cultivate the next generation of Democratic leadership and I am proud of the campaign we are building to defeat George Santos today. But the truth is I cannot do any of it alone.
