Don’t let the MAGA thwart democracy in the Buckeye State.

No matter how unpopular MAGA’s ideas are, like apocalyptic zombies they just keep resurrecting. They attack the seams of democracy to subvert the will of the voters. So it is with Issue 1, an already infamous ballot measure that would put an end to direct democracy in Ohio on August 8. With its attempt to destroy citizen ballot initiatives—like one protecting reproductive freedoms in November—the GOP-controlled legislature is relying on one thing in this special election: low turnout in the dog days of summer, when voters are less engaged and a few MAGA voters can squelch our voices.

Let’s flip the script.

To do it, we need Abe Teamers from across the country to GOTV like there’s no tomorrow—that’s the only way we’ll bury this anti-democratic farce in its cradle. Since 1912, Ohioans have shaped the destiny of their state through ballot initiatives whose only requirement is a simple majority to become law. By bumping the majority required to 60% and allowing a single rural red district to block a vote before it reaches the people, Issue 1 would make it impossible to pass any ballot measure MAGA doesn’t like, no matter how much popular support it has from voters across the state.

Team, do not be lulled by polls showing that Issue 1 will go down to defeat. Remember the rule: Polls are not votes, and we need votes. Sure, most Ohioans despise this radical attack on their basic freedoms, but what we don’t know is whether they’ll show up to vote—and that’s where we come in. One thing we can be sure of: If MAGA succeeds in Ohio, they’ll replicate Issue 1 everywhere they can. So let’s block out the chatter, let down the hammer, and turn out every vote we can get.
