We still need to lock in our wins from last year

Dear Friend,
In December, the Postal Service committed to electrifying most of its new fleet, and to only buy electric trucks after 2026. At the time, we celebrated the news and the successful efforts of Earthjustice supporters like you, while calling on the Postal Service to boost its percentage of off-the-shelf electric vehicles — trucks that are used for mail delivery but weren’t specifically designed for that.
Now, the Postal Service is starting the process to put these commitments into law. Thanks in part to public pressure, the Postal Service didn’t backslide on the percentage of electric vehicles it’s going to buy — a major win for everyone who wants to breathe clean air.
Unfortunately, not backsliding is not the same as improvement: the Postal Service refused to increase the overall proportion of electric trucks. More concerningly, the commitment to only buy electric trucks after 2026 has disappeared from the Postal Service’s plans. This is absolutely unacceptable — the Postal Service made a promise to the public and it needs to deliver.
Tell the Postal Service to stick to its word and only buy electric trucks after 2026.
We cannot allow the Postal Service to backtrack on this commitment. We’ve fought tooth and nail to push the agency to electrify its new mail trucks, and at every step of the way we’ve been met with resistance. An unenforceable promise to phase out polluting trucks is not good enough — we need that timeline to be legally binding so we can hold the Postal Service accountable if it doesn’t abide by it.
It’s frustrating that we’re still fighting the Postal Service to do the right thing, but the arc of this campaign makes me optimistic that we’ll prevail. When Earthjustice supporters like you first spoke up about this issue in 2021, the agency only planned to electrify about 10% of its new trucks. We’ve come a long way, and I know that we can succeed in pushing the Postal Service to recommit to only buying electric trucks after 2026.
Tell the Postal Service it needs to increase the proportion of electric mail trucks and deliver on its promise to only buy electric trucks after 2026.
Sincerely,
Adrian Martinez
Deputy Managing Attorney
