Technology-Facilitated Gender-Based Violence: Its Rise and
Our Responses

On June 22nd, 2023, WIIS and the Embassy of Liechtenstein hosted a virtual panel discussion on technology and how it is used as a tool in the fight for gender equality and development of women's agency in conflict-ridden environments.

This event featured opening remarks by Ariela Blätter (President and CEO, WIIS) and H.E. Ambassador Georg Sparber (Ambassador of Liechtenstein to the U.S.). The panel discussion featured Wai Wai Nu (Founder and Executive Director, Women’s Peace Network), Anna Nemtsova (Moscow Correspondent, The Daily Beast and Newsweek), and Sara Wahedi (Founder and CEO, Ehtesab). The panel was moderated by Dr. Karin Johnston (Research Director, WIIS).

Gendered Harm: The Disproportionate Impact of Weapons on Women and Girls
On May 17th, 2023, WIIS and the Embassy of Liechtenstein hosted a virtual discussion on how arms control, nonproliferation, and disarmament efforts must identify and address the harmful impact of weapons on women and girls.

This event featured opening remarks by Ariela Blätter (President and CEO, WIIS) and H.E. Ambassador Georg Sparber (Ambassador of Liechtenstein to the U.S.). The panel discussion featured Mary Olson (Founder, Gender and Radiation Impact Project), Dr. Natalie Goldring (Visiting Professor of the Practice, Duke University / UN Consultant, the Acronym Institute for Disarmament Diplomacy). The panel was moderated by Dr. Jana Wattenberg (Senior Fellow, WIIS).

WIIS Founder, Dr. Catherine Kelleher Life and Legacy Memorial

For over 35 years, WIIS has carried forward Dr. Catherine Kellerher's vision to ensure women have the network, tools, and support they need to succeed and lead in international security.

On April 27th, 2023, in an evening of reflection, Catherine’s family and colleagues spoke about her spectacular lifetime of service and her deep commitment to empowering the next generation of women as leaders as the reason that she founded WIIS. WIIS Represented at NATO Summit in Vilnius
On July 12th 2023, during the NATO Summit in Vilnius, high-ranking foreign and defense ministers met with civil society representatives to discuss how women in leadership can inspire change and garner support for women in all phases of the Ukraine conflict. This event was co-hosted by the NATO Secretary-General's Special Representative for Women, Peace and Security, Irene Fellin (Former President WIIS Italy) and the Speaker of the Lithuanian Seimas, Viktorija Čmilytė-Nielsen. Dr. Aliki Mitsakos (President, WIIS Greece) and Marian Caracuel (President, WIIS Spain) were in attendance. Loredana Teodorescu (President, WIIS Italy) participated as a guest facilitator of this premier dialogue featuring Ukranian Vicepremier, Olha Stefanisyna.

Podcast: Women in the Opposition with Belarus Leader

WIIS Italy coordinated a special conversation with the leader of Belarus Opposition, Svetlana Tikhanovskaya during a breakfast hosted by the Lithuanian Embassy in Rome while she was in Italy for an official visit. Loredana Teodorescu (President, WIIS Italy) facilitated the discussion, highlighting Svetlana's personal and professional commitment to the women's struggle for democracy in Belarus, after her husband's arrest. This dialogue focuses on Belarus's role in the Ukraine conflict and their interconnected future.

WIIS Germany Celebrates its 20 Year Anniversary

On November 16th, 2023, WIIS.de (WIIS Germany), will be celebrating its 20 year anniversary in a celebratory event; Security Strategies and Cooperation for the Next Two Decades.

One of the most active WIIS international chapters, WIIS.de is led by a dynamic group of women who continue to focus their creative efforts on supporting its members through a combination of activities and professional opportunities. The WIIS Berlin office supports smaller regional groups in Hamburg, Köln/Bonn, and Munich. In addition to these opportunities for members, WIIS.de is organizing an event in Berlin for the interested public. We send our congratulations to WIIS.de and look forward to many more years of friendship and fruitful collaboration.

Engendering Nuclear Disarmament: Challenges and Possibilities

This report examines the gender balance in counterterrorism and the challenges faced by women in the security sector. WISCOMP's objective is to promote a strategic approach and understanding of the role of women in the criminal justice response to terrorism and develop guidelines to support women’s participation in this response.

Foregrounding the voices of women in disarmament, this report builds on the conference proceedings of ‘Engendering Nuclear Disarmament: Challenges and Possibilities’ organized by WISCOMP. It addresses several concerns tracing the trajectory of India’s disarmament journey, normative contours and practical challenges of disarmament, implementation of the Women, Peace and Security Agenda and the role of women’s movements in promoting peace.

Integrating Gender and Climate Change Conversations

Based on research undertaken by Kubernein Initiative, Mumbai and WISCOMP, this policy paper provides perspectives on gender intentional climate action in India, expanding representation of women in governance to broaden ideas and perspectives, and significant empowerment of women to push the transformative potential of adaptation mechanisms with a bottom-up, localized approach. The primary focus is on positive initiatives that exist in urban areas and ideas on how they can be scaled up.

It highlights past examples, examines conflict resolution approaches, and discusses the significance of personal agency. The authors also explore how diverse perspectives shape legislation and highlight the challenges faced by women politicians.
