Friend,
On July 18th, Phoenix broke its record for the most consecutive days over 110 degrees.
The record was 18 days before, and we’re at 24 days now.
The next day, July 19th, Phoenix had its hottest day of the year — 119 degrees.
Extreme heat kills more people every year than just about every other natural event combined — hundreds in Maricopa County in 2022, and at least 18 so far this year.
All too often people are left to deal with this deadly heat on their own, without support.
That has to change.
In April of 2022, I introduced the Excess Urban Heat Mitigation Act to help cities deal with the causes and impacts of excess heat.
And this June, I introduced the Extreme Heat Emergency Act.
Here’s how it works: There’s a list of natural disasters that qualify for support from FEMA.
My bill adds heat to that list, so people suffering through extreme heat events get the same support as people hit by hurricanes or floods.
Here’s the problem: I introduced that bill with support from my colleagues, but Kevin McCarthy and the GOP control the House.
That’s why I need you.
Add your name here, and tell Congress that you support this critical legislation. It will save lives.
