Friends – can I share a personal story with you?

Just 24 years old. That’s how old my nephew Ian was when he passed away due to a drug overdose. He struggled with addiction for years, and despite our family’s best efforts to help him, it wasn't enough.

Ian is among 1 million Americans who have lost their lives to drug overdose since the start of the opioid epidemic. And here in Maryland, we have the 6th highest rate of opioid overdose in the country. 

But, I’m not going to let Ian’s story become another statistic.

Because the reality is, too many families have stories like Ian’s. It’s one of the reasons I got involved in public service to begin with and I refuse to just let this epidemic continue.

No one person can end the opioid epidemic – that’s why as soon as I got to Washington, I founded a bipartisan working group on addiction, which is now the Bipartisan Mental Health and Substance Use Disorder Task Force. We all need to make our voices heard on this issue.

The opioid epidemic affects millions of Americans every day. It continues to destroy families, communities, and entire regions of our country. 

We need better access to treatment and increased funding for prevention and education programs. That’s exactly what I’ll keep fighting for in the Senate.
