Dear John — I’m resending this email to make sure you don’t miss this important update. — Robert Reich
Dear John,
Last week, news broke that the U.S. Justice Department has informed Donald Trump that he is a target of the criminal investigation into the January 6 insurrection and that another indictment is imminent.
This would be Trump’s most serious indictment yet, effectively accusing him of a conspiracy to overthrow the government of the United States.
However, by all indications, these charges will only strengthen Donald Trump’s position in the Republican primary polls. And if Trump once again claims the Republican nomination, I truly fear for the future of our democracy.
But there is good news: The 14th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution explicitly bans anyone who has engaged in insurrection from running for president or any other public office, and this indictment will make it even more clear that Trump is disqualified from holding office.
The team here at Inequality Media Civic Action is launching a major effort to educate the public and urge state and local election officials to uphold their duty under the Constitution and disqualify him from running. But they will face enormous political pressure to allow Trump on the ballot, so we need to ramp up our efforts right now.
Will you make a donation to Inequality Media Civic Action and help educate the public and urge state officials to keep Donald Trump off the 2024 ballot?
The 14th Amendment, added to the Constitution after the Civil War, explicitly prohibits elected officials who’ve engaged in insurrection from serving in public office again.
It’s been applied many times in the past. In fact, just last year a New Mexico judge removed a county commissioner who participated in the January 6 insurrection from his office and banned him from running again in the future.
However, most Americans don’t know that, and the corporate media is still acting like the 14th Amendment doesn’t exist or is some fringe left-wing idea, rather than the law of the land. Meanwhile, Trump and his allies are pushing out lies that need to be debunked in real time.
That’s why Inequality Media Civic Action is using our proven-effective video explainers and other social media content to explain to the public why Trump should be disqualified.
On January 6, 2021 we saw the deadly lengths that Trump is willing to go in his pursuit of power. With Republican leaders like House Speaker Kevin McCarthy rallying behind him, he will have even more power to attack our democracy.
We can’t just sit back and let him set our democracy on fire again. But with the Iowa caucuses just six months away, we don’t have much time. Will you make a donation and help support this vital educational effort?
Yes, I’ll make a donation to educate the public and call on election officials to apply the 14th Amendment and keep Donald Trump off the 2024 presidential ballot.
Thanks for joining with us in the fight for democracy,
Robert Reich
