Folks,
Growing up, my family wasn’t really all that political. My dad was actually a Republican while my mom was an Independent. We didn’t sit around the dinner table in the evenings arguing about politics, that’s just not how it was. But somewhere along the line, I got bit by the politics bug. I have a vivid memory of being the Richard Nixon surrogate in my 8th grade class – yes I know, I’ve come a long way. I have my 8th grade history teacher, Jim Tyler, to thank for setting me on the path to being a Democrat. During the tumultuous year of 1968, it was my teacher who showed me the positive difference we can make for our country when government puts people first and we work together to make our country a better place.
Fast forward to 2023 and I’m a proud Democrat in my third term as your United States Senator, and I’m feeling pretty darn grateful about it. But with that gratitude comes frustration as I witness an unthinkable amount of cynical partisanship and try to fight back against the chaos it causes. Issues that shouldn’t be politicized by the right often are, all for their party’s gain, and the American people bear the consequences.
It’s in today’s political climate that I can’t help but think back to life with my parents as a kid. They always worked together to build a better life for my sister and I. It was watching their relationship that taught me the benefit of working with others, even those you might disagree with. In many ways I believe their relationship is what inspired my bipartisan approach in the Senate. I’ll work with whoever I need to in order to get things done for Virginians and fight for our country’s values.
Case in point: Our historic Bipartisan Infrastructure Law that saw major job-creating investments in public transit and green infrastructure in Virginia. Or our Bipartisan Safer Communities Act that took a big step forward in our work to tackle the gun violence crisis. Progress is possible if we push past faux division and partisanship.
Even in a divided Senate, I’m proud to get things done on a bipartisan basis. And I have my parents to thank for that mentality. But we need more politicians in Congress who will focus on delivering real results for the American people. Unfortunately right now, Republicans are far too concerned with dividing our country for the sake of remaining loyal to their party. That’s why while I’m not up for re-election, I’m on a mission to elect Democrats up and down the ballot who look past partisan gain.
Can you contribute anything you can to support my work to bring more leaders to Congress who are laser focused on addressing the issues that matter most to you?
