Hello John, this is Mark Pocan -- Member of Congress from Wisconsin’s 2nd District and co-chair of the Congressional LGBT Equality Caucus.
Sometimes the best way to expose Republican hypocrisy and bigotry is by confronting them head-on.
That's exactly what I did earlier this week when Republicans voted to strip funding for LGBTQ-focused projects from a major appropriations bill.
This wasn't their first attack on the LGBTQ community. Earlier this year, Republicans adopted an amendment to deny access to medically-necessary care to transgender veterans.
I'd had enough, John.
I reminded the committee about when I first ran for office as gay candidate. I got a letter in the mail with
‘dead f***ot’ written on a picture of my face. I reminded them about when I left a gay bar and two people followed me with a baseball bat and beat me until I was bloodied and unconscious, because I’m gay.
This is what Republicans enable with their bigotry, and since they refuse to see it, I decided to show them.
One of my colleagues on this committee who took these homophobic votes is Rep. Ken Calvert. He happens to represent Palm Springs -- home to one of our nation’s most vibrant LGBTQ communities.
I'm hoping to send Calvert an unmistakable message that his actions won't go unchecked. So today, I'm asking you to send in a $3 contribution to support his Democratic opponent Will Rollins before his end-of-month fundraising deadline.
If you've saved your payment information with ActBlue Express, your donation will go through immediately:
Will is a gay Democrat and former federal prosecutor who won’t turn his back on his district for cheap political points.
I’m proud to endorse Will, and his race in CA-41 happens to be the bellwether in the fight to retake control of Congress from these extremists.
Let's come together and bolster Will's campaign. In CA-41, we can flip Calvert’s seat and put an end to the Republicans’ disastrous leadership, but it'll depend on your support:
Please chip in $3 before Will’s end-of-month deadline hits.
Thank you,
Mark Pocan
