In the year since the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, 16 states have banned abortion—including Texas—making reproductive care harder to access across the country.
Women living in those states who are able to do so have had to travel to other states to get the care they need. In fact, roughly 1,400 Texans seeking abortions travel out of state every month for the care they need, and on average, they have to travel 542 miles to get it. And many more are not able to travel out of state for care.
It is not just patients who are affected in this way. Medical students in states with abortion bans are facing similar challenges. They have to travel to states where abortion is legal to receive proper training in a clinical setting.

I’m working in Congress to make sure we train the next generation of health care providers on a full range of reproductive health care. I introduced a bill with Congressman Ami Bera, M.D. (D-CA) that would create a grant program for students, residents, and advanced clinicians to get the training they need in states where abortion is legal—even if they are studying in a state where it is not.

Of course, I’m also working to ensure patients can access reproductive care, too. I reintroduced my bill with Congresswoman Marilyn Strickland (D-WA) and Congresswoman Cori Bush (D-MO) to provide round-trip financial support—for travel, lodging, meals, child care, and more—to patients who have to travel out of state for abortion care. And earlier this year, I reintroduced my bill protecting the right to travel itself.
