Expelled for being gay, using birth control, having sex, or being sexually assaulted? Yeah, that's real.

UPDATE: Today is the last day to submit your original comment. It takes just a few minutes at the link below.

John,

Surprise, surprise - Betsy DeVos and Donald Trump are up to it again. They've proposed yet another rule to weaken Title IX, and shatter anti-discrimination protections students deserve.

This one is particularly frightening – Trump and DeVos want to allow schools to discipline or even expel students if they violate a school's statement of religious practices. Yes, you read that right - expelled if they violate religious practices.

I'm sorry, but schools that receive our federal tax dollars - like Georgetown, Notre Dame, Loyola, or Brigham Young - should comply with federal anti-discrimination laws. Just imagine the harm that could befall students at religiously affiliated schools and colleges. For example:

  • A young woman at a school that espouses abstinence is sexually assaulted. Not only could she be ignored, but this rule would actually allow the school to punish her for sexual activity.

  • A gay freshman at Notre Dame is being harassed, and they disclose his sexual orientation in order to report it. The school tells him he brought it upon himself by coming out, he should seek conversion therapy, and expels him "for his own safety."

  • A professor sees a student walking out of an abortion clinic, where she is either volunteering or perhaps she had an abortion herself. She could be reported and punished for it.

  • A student's birth control pills fall out during office hours with a professor. If they later report consistently sexist behavior and grading bias from that professor, the student could be disciplined or expelled if that professor reports that they're on birth control

If these suggested changes become law, young people will be forced out of school simply for living their life. That’s why we need you to take action now to stop this.

We need you to:

  1. SUBMIT a comment here. We have made the process easy and fast, but it's SO important you do this because the Department of Education MUST respond to every comment, and we've seen how lots of comments can delay, weaken, or even stop these harmful rules in the past. Make sure you edit the pre-written form so your comment is unique.

  2. POST on social media to raise awareness and move others to act.

We can stop this egregious attack on students, but only if we band together and take action now.

In Solidarity,
