John,
On Tuesday, Social Security Works is kicking off our campaign against Medicare privatization with a day of lobbying on Capitol Hill. Seniors are coming to Washington DC from across the country, and we’re training them and taking them to speak with their Senators and Representatives about being forced onto private Medicare plans against their will. This is all in the leadup to our rally in front of the White House next Sunday, July 30th, Medicare’s birthday.
Can you donate $7 so we can be sure to have water and snacks for seniors as they make their voices heard to stop the stealth privatization of Medicare?
Medicare was not created out of the good of Lyndon Johnson’s heart, but because seniors are expensive to insure. When Medicare was created, half of all seniors didn’t have health insurance. After Medicare, every senior could count on at least some coverage.
Unfortunately, greedy health insurers saw the government covering health insurance and thought to themselves, “how can we get a piece of that?” So Medicare Advantage was created, cracking the door for private health insurers to prove that they could do better than Medicare. After more than 20 years of private Medicare Advantage plans, the results are clear: Privatized Medicare delivers worse care and costs more money―but now taxpayers like you and me are paying for it.
The seniors coming to Washington DC for our lobby day have heartbreaking stories that their elected officials need to hear―can you chip in $7 to help pay for transportation, food, and water to make this lobby day possible?
Thanks,
Michael Phelan Social Security Works
