John, The Washington Post recently reported on ‘ghost guns,’ and the findings are troubling. |

Among the people they interviewed was Michael Winfield, whose 17-year-old son, Calvin Van Pelt, was shot and killed in 2021. The shooter, who was only 18 years old, used a 'ghost gun' — a firearm that can be bought online, by anyone including by minors, and then assembled at home.
Many Americans still do not know what ‘ghost guns’ are. In fact, Calvin’s family was stunned to learn how the ‘ghost gun’ ended up in the hands of the 18-year-old shooter. More Americans need to know about these firearms. The facts are shocking. 'Ghost guns' are: - Designed to circumvent most gun laws
- Untraceable and unserialized
- Available to buy without a Brady Background Check
Make no mistake, homemade, untraceable ‘ghost guns’ pose one of the greatest threats to our public safety. They’re, by design, the perfect firearm for individuals who are unable to purchase a gun from a licensed gun dealer — including prohibited gun purchasers and minors.
So, what are we doing about it?
Last year, California passed the nation’s strongest 'ghost gun' bill, but there was more work to do. Just last week, Brady California and grassroots advocates helped advance a life-saving bill to regulate ‘milling machines’ from public use. Such machines are used by the public to create the parts to build ‘ghost guns.’ And with this step, we’re closer to outlawing these machines and protecting the public from these deadly firearms.
In the courts, Brady Legal filed suit on behalf of the city of Baltimore against the largest ‘ghost gun’ manufacturer, Polymer80. This suit seeks to stop the sale of 'ghost guns' in Baltimore and provide an abatement fund for the city of Baltimore to implement programs and projects to rehabilitate the city and its residents for the injuries and trauma inflicted on the city.
And in Congress, we're continuing to build support for the Untraceable Firearms Act — legislation to federally ban ‘ghost guns.’ Despite action by the Biden-Harris Administration and states across the country passing strong laws to regulate these weapons, federal legislative action is necessary to fully prevent the continued proliferation of these weapons in communities nationwide.
John, we’re working tirelessly across Congress, the courts, and our communities to combat ‘ghost guns’ and save lives — and we won’t give up. But we cannot do this vitally important work alone. We need support from dedicated grassroots supporters like you. Please, will you rush a gift to Brady right now? Your gift today will help save lives.

Brady Legal Files Lawsuit on Behalf of the Victims of the Buffalo Tops Supermarket Mass Shooting
Last week, Brady Legal filed a lawsuit on behalf of victims, families, and survivors of the Buffalo mass shooting. In May 2022, an 18-year-old gunman traveled over 200 miles to target a predominantly Black neighborhood. Armed with an AR-15-style assault weapon, a large-capacity magazine, and ballistic gear, he shot 13 people, killing ten, in what has been deemed a racist hate crime.
Our lawsuit claims that the body armor maker, RMA Armament, actively solicited the shooter’s business through the marketing and sale of body armor, which is only useful for the civilian market to carry out mass shootings. The shooter wrote about his desire to survive the attack and the suit alleges had it not been for his ability to purchase body armor, the attack may have never occurred.
The lawsuit also aims to hold the gun seller, Vintage Firearms, accountable for negligently transferring the weapon despite being presented with obvious red flags that indicated the weapon would likely be used for harm. And in addition to focusing on the actions of the gun industry, the suit also aims to hold prominent social media companies accountable for the role they played in radicalizing the shooter.
Brady is proud to fight for justice on behalf of those impacted by this hate-filled attack in Buffalo. Please join us in learning more about Brady Legal and our life-saving efforts in the courts. |
Remembering Aurora: Help Us Honor With Action
This week marked 11 years since the community of Aurora, CO, was devastated by, what was at the time, one of the deadliest mass shootings in modern U.S. history. A gunman entered a movie theater and used an AR-15-style rifle to shoot and kill 12 people and injure more than 70 others. Today and every day, it’s vitally important to remember the victims, their stories, and the lives they lived.
Since the 2012 Aurora shooting, Brady has worked tirelessly to uphold life-saving laws and enact new, sensible solutions to prevent another massacre. But we know that for many, going to the movie theater still means looking for exits and planning for the worst. We must honor those impacted in Aurora with action and free ourselves from gun violence. Please help us honor the victims and survivors of the Aurora mass shooting. |
