A NOTE FROM CHRISSY: I’m hoping you and your loved ones are staying safe and comfortable through the hottest days on record this month. Things have been heating up (I couldn’t resist) in Washington, DC and I want to share what I and my team have been up to.
Protecting Women in Uniform and our National Security: As you may know, I serve on the Armed Services Committee which passes a law every year directing programs and funding to maintain our national security. After SCOTUS overturned Roe, President Biden announced the military would pay for the travel costs for any woman in uniform needing reproductive care not available in the state where the military sent her. Earlier this month, Republicans inserted language into this bill to overturn the President’s order. As one of only a handful of female veterans in Congress, I am outraged and horrified by the impact this will have on women’s health, our ability to attract and retain women to our all-volunteer force, and consequently, our readiness to face threats to our national security. I am leading the fight to make sure this doesn’t become law.
Fighting for Our Planet: Democrats are often at the forefront of environmental policy and climate action (yay us!) but we can’t do it alone. We need our Republican neighbors, friends, and here in Congress, colleagues to make lasting change that saves our planet. I’m so pleased to share that I, along with a Republican member from New York, have rebuilt and just relaunched the Bipartisan Climate Solutions Caucus. For the first time in years, the Caucus has an equal number of Democrats and Republicans. Now let’s get to work!
Holding my 74th Town Hall: Gun Violence Prevention. President Biden signed the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act into law last year and, as the first major gun violence prevention legislation in decades, we stopped for a moment to celebrate. But with over 400 mass shootings this year alone, we all know there is still more work to be done. So much more. To address this, I held a telephone town hall that brought together activists, survivors, sportsmen (and women!), and elected officials.
Fighting for Women and Girls: The UNFPA Funding Act. Recently, I reintroduced my UNFPA Funding Act which ensures that the United States contributes to the UN Population Fund (UNFPA). UNFPA makes the world a safer place for women and girls by offering access to contraceptives, maternal and newborn care, and critical education services. It also fights to end gender-based violence and harmful practices like child marriage. As we struggle to protect reproductive freedom here in the US, I won’t stop fighting for the rights of women everywhere.
Thank you for staying engaged and involved in this important work. It’s meant so much to hear your thoughts and ideas over the past month regarding these tough, personal issues. They inform and power the work I do every day. While we’ve already accomplished so much, I know we’ll have more victories ahead. I’ll be in touch soon, and I’m hoping you have a wonderful summer. There’s work to be done. -Chrissy
