Dear John,

In case you missed it, last week we announced our first candidate of 2020: Harold Hayes, running to help flip Pennsylvania blue ([link removed][UNIQID]) !

Harold “Howie” Hayes is first and foremost a worker, and his interest in public office is deeply informed by his childhood experiences. The son of a Philadelphia Democratic Committeewoman, he has been knocking on doors for Democratic candidates since he was six years old.

Howie has been an active member of Plumbers Local 690 since graduating high school, and he's worked hard to support union candidates. He's been a fierce advocate to protect trade unions and will continue to do so in the PA legislature. As a long-time Bucks County resident with two young sons in school, Howie also plans to fight to increase funding for public schools and protect clean air and water for future generations.

Howie is running for the Pennsylvania House of Representatives in a special election that will take place on March 17.

WHY THIS RACE IS IMPORTANT

Democrats need to win 9 house seats to flip the chamber blue, and electing Howie will bring Democrats within striking distance of that in November. This district is ready for a Democrat like Howie. In 2018, Democratic governor Wolf carried the district by 23 points, and in 2016, Clinton received almost 52% of the vote.

Plus, this is a ‘last chance’ district: whoever is elected to the PA state legislature in November 2020 will draw the next round of district lines.

And of course, Pennsylvania is a critical, perennial battleground presidential state – one of the “Big Four” states that are likely to control the outcome of the 2020 presidential election. Democrats have a tremendous opportunity to claim PA’s 20 Electoral College votes this year, with smart organizing, expanding the electorate through voter registration, and turnout efforts.

WHAT CAN I DO RIGHT NOW?
1. Make a donation of $20.20 (or more if you can!) to Howie. Your donation will go entirely to the candidate. ([link removed][UNIQID]) Opponents are often funded by just a few big donors, so let’s show them some grassroots love!
2. Spread the word! Help others learn about your candidate on social media. Please follow and like, and check out our shareable graphics and dossier ([link removed][UNIQID]) about Howie.

WHAT’S NEXT?

You'll have opportunities to phonebank, canvass, textbank, and write postcards with other members of your Sister District DC team. We'll have more information about these activities soon.

Make sure you are in touch with your District Captains so that you learn about opportunities to support your candidate. You might even want to offer to help out with or host an event! If you don’t know how to contact your District Captain, fill out this form ([link removed][UNIQID]) so we can connect you.

Onwards,

Gaby Goldstein
Co-Founder & Political Director

P.S. Early money is critical in these small, under-funded state legislature races. Please consider making a donation to Howie right now—it will help his campaign get off to a great start!
