Virginia’s Felony Disenfranchisement Provision Faces a New Legal Challenge Under This 150-Year-Old Law ([link removed])

By Rachel Selzer

Here are some updates from today.
* With today’s deadline, the Alabama Legislature passed ([link removed]) a new congressional map, sending it to Gov. Kay Ivey (R) for her signature. The plan has a Black voting-age population share of 50.65% in the 7th Congressional District and 39.9% in the 2nd Congressional District, meaning the map has just one majority-Black district, but a federal district court ordered two. Check out the newly passed map here:

* Pennsylvania Republicans appealed ([link removed]) a lower court’s decision upholding Act 77, the state's election reform law passed by the Republican-controlled General Assembly in 2019. Among its many provisions, Act 77 enables no-excuse mail-in voting in Pennsylvania.

* There was a hearing in a lawsuit ([link removed]) challenging Idaho's new law that eliminates student IDs as an acceptable form of identification to vote. Voting groups argue that the law violates the state constitution and ask a court to block its enforcement.
