In late 2018, teen wrestler Andrew Johnson was told he had to cut his dreadlocks or face forfeiture. Despite this questionable call, he went on to win the match -- but state officials opened a civil rights investigation. I also decided to do something about it myself.
The referee claimed Andrew's hair violated wrestling rules, but it's clear that this was racial discrimination in action, plain and simple as that. That's why I co-sponsored the CROWN Act so this never happens again.
This bill would ban discrimination based on hair textures and styles in order to improve equity in education, employment, housing, and access to public programs. The legislative language has been crafted to explicitly name hairstyles associated with Black folks, from dreadlocks to cornrows to Bantu knots.

To be clear, this isn't just about hair, John. It's about dignity and equal treatment for all of us. According to a 2019 study, Black women's hair is more likely to be perceived as "unprofessional" than a white woman's. It was also discovered that Black women were more likely to be sent home from work simply because of their hair. In fact, four out of five Black women said they had to change their hair from its natural state to fit in at work.
