[1]Ayanna Pressley
Ayanna reintroduced the End Qualified Immunity Act, alongside Senator Ed
Markey, advocates, and impacted families.
Police brutality is a crisis plaguing Black and brown communities, and
qualified immunity currently shields law enforcement from accountability —
denying justice for too many victims and families who’ve been robbed of
their loved ones. That's why Ayanna has been fighting to end qualified
immunity since her first term in Congress.
Ayanna originally introduced this bill in June 2020 after the murder of
George Floyd by police in Minneapolis. Ayanna is reintroducing this
legislation to keep up the pressure on Congress to act, because we know
there can be no true accountability in our country if we do not eliminate
qualified immunity.

In 1871, Congress passed the “Ku Klux Klan Act,” one of the first civil
rights laws — that allowed people to sue anyone acting under the authority
of the state who deprived them of their constitutional rights. It’s the
law the Supreme Court gutted when it created the doctrine of qualified
immunity.
So now more than 150 years later — in the face of persistent,
traumatizing, deadly police violence — it’s why Ayanna reintroduced her
legislation to restore the protections provided by the “Ku Klux Klan Act”
and end qualified immunity. We must be bold and unapologetic in our
pursuit of policies that ensure police accountability and address the
crises of systemic racism and police brutality.
