Friend,

Our country’s judicial branch is facing a crisis of legitimacy. Public trust in the Supreme Court is at an all-time low – not just because of extremist conservative legislating from the bench, but also because of reports of egregious corruption from some of the justices this year.

Justice Clarence Thomas’ offenses may be the most glaring of all. First, Justice Thomas refused to recuse himself from cases regarding the Jan. 6 hearings – even though his wife, Ginni, was reportedly plotting to keep Trump in office. Then, it was revealed that Thomas has accepted luxury gifts and travel, home purchases, and private school tuition from a notorious right-wing Republican donor – for decades.

The Supreme Court as an institution and a branch of government is only as strong as its members’ integrity. Being independent doesn't mean the Court is above the law, and there is absolutely no reason all Supreme Court justices shouldn’t be held to the same ethical standards as lower court judges, other public servants, or any American worker.

That’s why I just joined every Democrat on the Senate Judiciary Committee in voting to advance legislation calling for an enforceable ethics code and increased transparency on the Supreme Court. Restoring the Court’s integrity and holding all justices accountable shouldn’t be a partisan issue – but every Republican on the committee voted against the bill, and many used today’s hearing to distract the public from the right-wing justices’ ethical lapses rather than attack the problem of corruption on the Court head on.

If we’re going to have any hope of restoring trust in our nation’s highest court, I need supporters like you to add your voice to this critical fight for transparency and accountability, friend. Can I count on you to sign my petition now?

Every day we fail to take action on this critical issue public confidence in the Court, and our entire judicial branch, is further eroded. The health of our democracy is on the line, and I thank you for doing your part by demanding action today.

Sincerely,

Dick
