Seattle is among the cities along the Pacific Northwest coast that could be devastated by the next big quake on the Cascadia Subduction Zone.

A tectonic plate is dying. A vast subterranean zone that stretches from northern California to Canada’s Vancouver Island has churned up a series of magnitude 9 quakes over the centuries, the last 320-some years ago that devastated Native peoples and created a tsunami felt in Japan.

Scientists say Seattle (above) and other parts of the region are overdue for another. Simulations find, curiously, that damage may be less related to how close the epicenter is to a city as it is to how far and in what direction it spreads along the fault line.

Nearly 80 years ago, bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Hibakusha is the Japanese term for “atomic bomb survivors”—but given the lasting damages of radiation exposure, it’s maybe more accurate to say “atomic bomb sufferers.” These are their stories.

Last summer, two climate activists, from Just Stop Oil, covered and glued themselves to a painting called "The Hay Wain" by John Constable hanging in London's National Gallery. The painting, which depicts an idyllic country landscape, was covered with a picture depicting a dystopian, polluted image of the same scene.

Purposeful controversy: Yes, that’s the glass covering of Vincent van Gogh’s “Sunflowers” smothered in tomato soup in a London museum. Climate protesters from Just Stop Oil say this tactic is to draw attention to the climate crisis—and the sluggish global response to stop it.
