Last year, we gave out 1,015 backpacks to kids in our community who didn’t have one as they headed back to school. This year, we want to double that number.

This is Alexandria’s fifth back-to-school drive, and in that time we’ve teamed up with NYC public housing developments, community organizations, houses of worship, food pantries and local elected officials to give thousands of kids a strong start to the school year with pencils, pens, crayons, erasers, notebooks, rulers, and a backpack.
Many of the organizations we partner with to distribute school supplies — such as Make The Road NY, the Street Vendors Project, and NICE — focus on uplifting our most vulnerable communities, including immigrants new to the U.S.
We’ve run the numbers, and $8 - $10 means a child without school supplies can start the year with their head held high.
