John -
We need you to take action for Hoang Thi Minh Hong and others who have been detained for protecting our planet, right now.
Hong, from Vietnam, was arrested in what the US State Department is calling "part of a concerning pattern of arrests of local environmental and civil society advocates."
Hong has been detained without charge and has been denied access to a lawyer. She faces up to seven years behind bars for a spurious charge of tax evasion. The Vietnamese prison system has horrific conditions, torture, and neglect.
Hong, and other climate defenders, have been a crucial part in ensuring Vietnam has bold climate ambitions. These people have fearlessly fought to address the climate crisis.
However, the Vietnamese government has been detaining these brave individuals. This endangers climate action within Vietnam. And it could have bigger implications for the country's pivotal role as a heavily climate-impacted nation and emerging economy.
To be fair, the solutions to the climate crisis must involve groups and organizations working for the interest of the people. They should be able to contribute and monitor climate agreements, without the fear of persecution. To create a better future where climate justice prevails and all voices are heard, we must unite and demand the release of Hoang Thi Minh Hong and other climate defenders.
On behalf of everyone campaigning for Hong's release, I'm asking for your support in sending a letter to your representative in your region. By urging your minister or representative to call upon the Vietnamese government to release Hong and all climate defenders, you can make a difference.
Together, we can create an environment where climate defenders can work freely, protected from unjust persecution. When we stand together, we can bring about positive change and ensure a just and sustainable world for generations to come.
Onwards,
Team 350
